You do not know your length in centimetres

Ruler

The price list is keyed to hair length in centimetres — and nobody carries that number in their head. Measure it from a photo: a bank card in frame sets the scale, you place four points, the page names the price band and both figures from the table above.

How to take the photo

  1. Hair combed, dry and loose. Have someone shoot from behind, or use a mirror.
  2. Press a bank card against the strand so that it lies in the same plane as the hair, not nearer the camera. The long edge runs along the strand.
  3. Shoot from about a metre and a half (in a mirror the path counts to the glass and back).
  4. The frame must contain both ends of the card, the roots and the ends of the hair. The precision comes afterwards, from the “Zoom in” button.

The reference is the long edge of a bank card: 85.60 mm under ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1. It is identical at every bank in the world, so no separate ruler is needed.

The ruler needs scripts, and they are off. The way round it is short: the long edge of any bank card is 8.6 cm — walk it down the strand. Or send me the photo and I will read the length off it.

Where the photo goes

Nowhere. The work happens inside your browser, and the page has nowhere to send the picture: this site’s security policy permits network requests to itself only. Close the tab and nothing remains.

How accurate it is

The bound depends on how large the card was on screen when you placed its points, and on what placed them — so the page computes it for your photo and shows it beside the number. It is made of three independent parts: the precision of the two points on the card, the same at the ends of the hair, and how far the card stands out of the strand’s plane. The first is three times larger for a finger than for a mouse (1.6 mm, measured by Holz and Baudisch, CHI 2011), and zooming is what removes it.

Press “Zoom to the card” and the page picks the magnification for you. On a phone it picks more than on a computer: a finger places a point less precisely than a cursor, and the figure shows it. After zooming, the measurement lands in a single band in about four cases out of five; in the rest the page shows two adjacent prices — which is more honest than picking the nearer one.

Frequently asked

Why does the price depend on hair length?

Longer hair needs more product and more time for layered application and sealing. That is why the price list is built on length bands rather than one flat figure per treatment.

Can the price grow during the session?

No. I name the final figure after the diagnosis and before starting — including any surcharge for density and porosity. After that the price does not change.
